So I was curious--how long do each of you take to prepare for lecture? I tend to organize my thoughts and what I want to say through the creation of Powerpoints, but it takes me a ridiculously long amount of time to do this--like, 4-5 hours per 20-30 min lecture. Which, given that I'm teaching 3 times a week, takes up most of my time. I can prep Powerpoints themselves quickly, but it just takes me forever to think out the "bulletpoints" I want to cover.
Are any of you having a similar experience, or have advice on how to prep more efficiently?
Wow, I am definitely not preparing as much as you are, but that is not necessarily a good thing. I don't know...I have my students in a circle and the course is very much discussion based. It's like a light version of the graduate seminar. Students are required to do the readings and will endure pop quizzes, but there are no exams so I don't feel like it's necessary to present the info as if it's data for them to remember. I sort of force them to engage with the text and other students though because I have once a week student led discussions.
ReplyDeleteBut I have only taught twice so it has mostly been house keeping stuff and introductions. I am worried about keeping on track thought and going over everything I need to go over. Maybe I should try a power point once in a while? Some students say they don't learn with powerpoint because it's too passive, others say they don't feel like they are learning in a discussion based setting.
I'm kind of unsure..I guess we should mix it up a little?
